01 · What it actually is

An alarm system doing its job too well

Anxiety is not a character flaw and it is not weakness. It is a threat-detection system, one of the oldest and most useful circuits in the body, firing when it doesn't need to. When the alarm goes off, the body does exactly what it was built to do: adrenaline rises, the heart speeds up, breathing goes shallow and high in the chest, muscles brace, digestion slows or churns. Useful for escaping danger. Exhausting when the "danger" is an unread email.

Most anxiety advice starts with the thoughts. We start with the body, because for a lot of people the body symptoms come first: you notice your heart pounding, and then the worried thoughts arrive to explain it. That's also the good news. The body side of the loop, breath, movement, caffeine, sleep, is the side you can act on today, with levers you can physically hold.

02 · How it works

The threat loop behind the symptoms

Here's the chain. Something registers as a threat, real or not. The sympathetic nervous system fires: stress hormones rise, heart rate climbs, breathing shifts fast and shallow. Those body sensations are then noticed by the brain, which reads them as more evidence that something is wrong, and turns the alarm up further. Body feeds mind, mind feeds body, around and around. That loop is why "just stop worrying" never works: the loop has a physical half, and the physical half keeps restarting it.

The dotted line is the part that matters. Body symptoms feed worried thoughts, which feed body symptoms. Therapy works on the top of the loop. Breath, movement, caffeine and sleep work on the bottom, and the bottom is the half you can reach in the next ten minutes.

03 · Where it sits in your two dials

Drive stuck high, reserves running low

We measure your drive (how activated you are) and your reserves (how much you have to recover with). Anxiety usually shows up as a system running hot: drive jammed high by a nervous system that won't stand down, while poor sleep and constant bracing drain the reserves underneath. The work is not to fight the drive. It is to give the body enough genuine settling that the dial can come down on its own.

The body-first approach to anxiety is not a workaround for people who can't get therapy. It has its own deep evidence base, and each lever below has been tested properly. These are the findings our anxiety habits are built from:

STUDY 01
Across dozens of randomised trials, in both clinical and non-clinical populations, exercise reliably reduces anxiety symptoms. It is one of the most consistently replicated findings in lifestyle mental health, and it does not require intense training to show up.

STUDY 02
Slow breathing at around six breaths per minute increases vagal tone and reduces acute anxiety. Extending the exhale activates the parasympathetic brake directly: it is the one part of the alarm system with a manual override.

STUDY 03
A systematic review and meta-analysis of 47 trials found mindfulness meditation programmes produced moderate improvements in anxiety (alongside depression and pain), with effects that held up against active comparison conditions.

Caffeine can trigger and worsen anxiety symptoms. It raises heart rate and adrenaline, and mimics the exact body sensations the threat loop feeds on. For anxious people, reducing or re-timing caffeine is one of the fastest levers available.

STUDY 05
Experimental sleep research shows that sleep loss amplifies next-day anxiety, while deep sleep restores the brain circuits that keep the alarm in check. A bad night doesn't just make you tired. It makes tomorrow's threat system trigger-happy.

STUDY 06
Your gut produces most of the body's serotonin, and the vagus nerve wires it straight to the brain's anxiety circuits. Gut and mood differ measurably between anxious and non-anxious people, which is why the churn in your stomach is part of the anxiety, not just a side effect.

STUDY 07
A blood-sugar crash after a high-carb meal triggers an adrenaline release that feels physically identical to an anxiety attack. Much of what feels like "random" anxiety is actually reactive hypoglycaemia.

Low heart rate variability is both a marker of anxiety and a lever on it. Slow breathing, exercise and better sleep raise HRV and lower anxiety, the measurable version of shifting out of high alert.

STUDY 09
Time in natural environments lowers cortisol and heart rate and improves HRV, and "green exercise" outdoors reduces anxiety more than the same movement indoors. One of the most evidence-backed anxiety interventions is simply going outside.

Magnesium deficiency is linked to higher anxiety, and supplementation shows modest calming effects. Alcohol is worth naming too: it eases anxiety for an evening, then rebounds it the next day through GABA rebound and raised cortisol, the "hangxiety" effect.
